Fruits and Vegetables

The concept of planting veggies in our flower gardens is becoming more and more popular. We think it’s because people are getting more and more in touch with what paradise can be.

Picture how wonderful it would be to go out to your garden and …
  • bring in a basket of brilliant poppies, vivid blue larkspur and delicate pink dianthus mixed with tempting blackberries and fuzzy peaches.

  • or savor the taste of a plump, ripe grape you just picked from your garden arbor while you gathered a bouquet of tangerine-colored nasturtium to grace this evening’s dinner salad.

  • or perhaps you start your day with coffee while you drink in the sight of the sweet basil and frilly lettuce leaves you’ve planted as greenery under your purple coneflowers.
When people think of vegetable gardens, they usually envision some scraggly tomato plants or a square plot with uniform rows of corn and beans. But with a little imagination, you can mix beauty and design with the practicalities of food production.

Some of our favorite fruits and vegetables to use in garden plans are:
  • Peppers

  • Cabbage

  • Lettuce

  • Asparagus

  • Peas

  • Berries

  • Lemons

  • Grapes
We highly recommend 'Landscaping with Fruits and Vegetables' by landscape architect Fred Hagy to learn more about how to incorporate fruit and veggies into your flower garden idea.

Home Garden Tip: Train peas to go up a French ‘tuteur’, a wooden frame which resembles an obelisk or pyramid, to add architectural interest to your garden.
